The sixth chakra is called the Third Eye chakra and its original Sanskrit name is Ajna. The meaning of Ajna is ‘perception’ but also ‘become aware of’ and ‘control’. The Third Eye chakra is depicted as a two leafed lotus flower. The two leaves are placed next to the heart of the flower, like wings. In the heart of the flower, an inverted triangle can be found and a crescent moon placed over it.
This chakra is situated in the middle of the forehead, right over the bridge of the nose, between the physical eyes. The Ajna chakra is connected to the pituitary gland in the endocrine system. The Third Eye chakra is associated with psychic abilities, clairvoyance, the power of thought, imagination and seeing on all levels and intuition. The function of this chakra is aptly described by its Sanskrit name Ajna, meaning command. It is from this level, when we reach it, that we can control or command the whole personality or lower self. This is the seat of mind and at this level we experience mentation; that is to say, a flow of mental images and abstract ideas continually coming and going in the mind.
The Power of Thought
Thought is so potent that it materializes itself through the ether. So that what we think, we become. Everything which exists at the material level and which is perceptible to the senses has previously been formed as a mental image in the mind of its creator. Just as the ether is the subtle pervasive substratum of the four lower elements, so thought is the even subtler and more potent principle above the ether. To create anything, it is only necessary to think it into existence. However, this statement covers an enormous field of practical application and endeavour. It is very hard to bring thought under such control that it forms only those images which we want it to and no others.
When this chakra is blocked, you may react cool to everything or just the opposite, be very aggressive, rigid, stubborn and assertive in your ways. Also, egoism is connected to a blockage in the Third Eye chakra and fear of success is one of the signs of a disharmony in this chakra. Physical problems related to a blockage in this chakra are: headaches, blood circulation disorders in the brain, problems with the eyes and nose and blindness.
Location: Above and between eyebrows.
Glandular Connection: Pituitary Gland
Associated Organs:
Third eye or Ajna chakra issues manifest mainly around the eyes, ears, nose, the brain and the nervous system as well as the pituitary gland. Manifesting in headaches, vision problems and nightmares.
Balanced Ajna Chakra:
A person with a well-balanced Ajna chakra can be very charismatic and intuitive. They have a calm mind and able to see clearly without personal issues getting in the way. They accept people and situations as they come without being judgemental. They have the ability to think symbolically and also to imagine different outcomes, finding a guiding vision that gives meaning to life. A balanced Ajna chakra also enables access to and remembering of dreams, easy to visualize and have a very good memory.
Overactive Third Eye Chakra:
The overactive Third Eye chakra will lead to overactive imagination which is ungrounded in reality. It can also lead to the blockage of the memory of events, rigid, fixed mind attitude, not being able to fully experience and integrate events, which will later haunt them in dreams, nightmares or obsessive fantasies. They are often easily distracted and ruled by anxieties.
Under-Active Ajna Chakra:
A deficient Ajna Chakra will make it difficult to visualize and imagine things, difficult to remember dreams with generally poor memory. The Ajna chakra may have been closed for protection from bitter memories. Generally, there is poor intuition which is compensated by rational thought processes, being stuck in a world of black and white consciousness, living in denial and sometimes even insensitive towards others.
Energetic Healing of the Third Eye Chakra:
Before we can work effectively on the Third Eye chakra, it is important that balance has been restored in the lower chakras first. They need to form a solid foundation for the Third Eye chakra to build on. This will serve the integration of the self, without getting lost on the astral realm. Developing latent capacities to use intuition and to open to dream work, visual arts and meditation deepen the healing process around the Third Eye chakra. Chakra balancing as well as chakra restructuring, sound healings and colour healings as well as past life regressions are very effective for the support of a well-functioning Third Eye chakra. Creative artwork, meditation and working with dreams and guided visualizations can also restore balance to the Third Eye chakra.
